Two Mile Run County Park is a little jewel nestled in the hills of NW Pennsylvania and was just the right size for this six hour adventure race. Although everyone came prepared for a rainy weekend, the weather turned out to be great for adventure racing with overcast skies and cool temperatures.

At the start of the race, competitors had a choice of either a mountain biking element or a paddling element, and most chose to begin by paddling to 4 checkpoints along the lakeshore. Local triathlete Tori Hartzell covered the 3+ mile course in about 45 minutes. A stiff breeze slowed down some of the novice paddlers, but soon they were all off on the 9 mile singletrack mountain bike trail. Most were able to visit the five CPs along the moderatley easy mountain bike trail in a little over two hours, but an unusually large number of flats and mechanical problems kept some teams out on the course for much longer.

Regardless of the order in which they were completed, the initial paddling and biking elements were mandatory, but after completing those two sections, things took an interesting turn...competitors could now return to all of the paddling and biking checkpoints on foot, as well as a few others that were off trail and would require bushwhacking as well as map & compass navigation. Racers could use their boats to access the water CPs, but other than that, had to travel on foot and visit as many CPs as they could before the end of the six hour race. Each CP was worth 10 points, but there was a stiff penalty for late return, so getting greedy did not pay off.

It soon became clear that Tori was as good a navigator as athlete, and although pursued closely by Bonnie & Matt Hartmann, was able to 'clean' the course in only 4 hours and 44 minutes to win the first annual 2 Mile Run Adventure Race. A picnic lunch and social hour followed and everyone was safely on the way home by the time the rain finally started to fall.

Many thanks to Chad Sutley for suggesting a race at Two Mile Run and all his work in bringing the race together.
