Cave Run Lake Adventure Race

September 16-17, 2006
Cave Run Lake
Morehead, KY

Enjoy the best that north central Kentucky has to offer. This race offers both a six hour sprint format and a full 24 hour long course that, although challenging, can be completed by any reasonably fit adventure racer with the gumption to see it through.

 race description, disciplines & distances

Detailed pre-race bulletin is posted here

Part of the challenge, and a lot of the fun, is the surprises that the race will throw your way, so we can't disclose the exact distances of each particular element. It would be more useful to simply view the race in terms of time and to realize that you'll be on the course for either 6 or 18-24 hours, and plan accordingly. Our unique "rogaine style" orienteering finishes ensure that most teams can probably complete the race in the specified time without the need for arbitrary cutoffs. That being said, you'll probably bike further than you'll run, and you'll run more than you'll paddle.

Both races are unsupported and you will be required to stage your boats and/or bikes at predetermined locations prior to the race start.

SHORT COURSE
(6 hours)
The short course includes:
  • excellent singletrack mountain biking
  • paddling on one of the many protected inlets of Cave Run Lake
  • an exciting rappel from a high bluff overlooking the Kentucky hills
  • ...and, of course, our hand-crafted 'freestyle navigation finish' that will ensure no matter what your ability level, you will be back to the finish line within six hours.

In addition, the short course race begins at 4:00pm and ends at 10:00pm, which will add a bit of night navigation to the mix.

After the race, you can join us for a late night hot snack, hang out at the START/FINISH and watch the long-course racers come and go, and when you've had enough, camp there for the night.

AWESOME LONG COURSE
(18-24 hours)
Includes everything the short course does (paddling, mtn biking, rappelling and nav), just more of it (lots more!).

The main difference will be that the long course will be a 'freestyle' contest. This is also known as 'rogaine-style' or 'multigaine' format and means that a whole bunch of checkpoints will be spread throughout the forest and across the lake...teams will have 24 hours to visit as many of them as they can by any combination of foot, bike or boat. Whichever team gets the most wins!

There are a few restrictions, such as the rappel site (which you do for the points involved) is only open during certain hours and we have a few prohibited routes to make the course competitive, but for the most part, it is up to you to decide the best way to maximize your team's score. It involves a knowledge of your team's strengths and weaknesses and a clever strategy to do well.

For example, in last year's race, some competitors went after the lake CPs during the day and found the high winds and boat traffic to be quite difficult. Other teams anticipated this and went out after midnight...they said the lake was completely mirror smooth and it was totally awesome...until the fog rolled in and they had to follow the 18 miles of shoreline to find their way back. Other teams completely skipped the lake section and concentrated on getting as many of the 2X foot orienteering points as possible.

Teams can return to the central staging area at any time they wish to rest and resupply, and we have a hash house going all night with hot food and cold drinks. This is one of the things that makes this the perfect race for teams looking to move up into longer races without biting off more than they can chew. There is a 24 hour time limit, so no matter how bad your race may be going, you can rest assured that it won't unexpectedly turn into a 36-48 hour epic.

The long course begins at 10:00am Saturday morning and should finish about dawn on Sunday. The absolute cutoff and awards presentation is 10:00am.

 team composition
Both the short course and the long course are open to solos, and we have many individuals who find the race format perfect for their first attempt at racing by themselves. Most people however, prefer to share the experience with one or more friends, and team sizes range from 2-4, any gender or age composition.

 prizes & awards
We love to recognize outstanding achievement, which usually means we try to go three deep in every category. Prizes are generally a combination of sponsor donated 'schwag' and race credits to future Ambush Adventure races.

 required gear
The only required gear is...
  • Mountain bike, helmet and lights
  • Canoe or kayak, paddles and PFD (rental boats available)
  • Rappelling harness and hardware
...but most adventure racers are going to carry a little something for food, water and emergencies such as:
  • Hydration pack (ie. Camelbak) & plenty of water (or water purification kit)
  • bike repair kit, pump and spare tubes
  • Extra clothing, windbreaker, fleece
  • First aid kit, small knife, emergency space blanket, whistle
  • Energy bars, gel or snacks

 skills certifications
No skills certifications are required for this adventure race. The race includes a rappelling element off of a high and exposed bluff. The rappel site will be staffed by volunteers for your safety, but they will not be able to give you rappelling instructions on the spot (and a race is no place to be learning that kind of skill. If you need to learn how to safely rappel or need a refresher, please attend one of the pre-race training sessions hosted by the Cave Run Bike Shop.

Aside from that, the race is suitable for all skill and experience levels. The six hour race in particular is just right for novices and will give you a good taste for adventure racing without getting in over your head. The long course would be a great intro for those looking to move up from 6 or 8 hour races into 24 hour or multiday races. The unique 'freestyle navigation' nature of the race ensures that your 18-24 hour race won't turn into a 36-48 hour odyssey.

 maps
Maps will be of a variety of types and scales suitable for the adventure race. They are usually premarked with checkpoint locations and it usually will not be necessary to plot CP locations from UTMs.
