 race description, disciplines & distances
This unique off-road adventure triathlon features open water swimming in beautiful Lake Hope, 100% singletrack mountain biking on the superb trails of the Zaleski State Forest and a challenging trail run on those same trails.

Multiple formats provide something for everyone:

  • SHORT COURSE
    • 1/2 mi swim - 9+ mi. 100% singletrack mtn. bike - 3.8 mi trail run
    • Provides both a conventional 'sprint' triathlon
    • ...or a canoe option for those that do not wish to swim
  • LONG COURSE
1 mi open water swim - 30+ mi. mtn. bike (mostly singletrack) - 13 mi. trail run
    • conventional (swimming) format...
    • ...or canoeing format
    • ...and a relay (team) format

Last year we ran the long course as a half-Ironman, and in an anal-retentive attempt to get the distances exactly right, we were not able to utilize the best resources the park has to offer...and the race was a bit too long for most folks This year we have designed the course around the best resources the park has to offer, and mileages, while a little shorter than the official half-Iron distance will make for about a 5-7 hour race. Distances are approx. 1mi. swim / 30+ mi. mtn bike / 13 mi. trail run.

This event is NOT sanctioned by the USAT

Lake Hope is only minutes from your location.

 team composition
The conventional triathlon is an individual event.

The long course provides a relay category that can be completed by two or three team members. The long course will be designed in such a way as to have 2 loops of each element so that each team member (on a two person team) can participate in each discipline (ie. each can swim, bike and run) or one team member can complete all of the swimming before handing off to the next team member who completes all of the biking and then the third team member completes all of the running...or any variation thereof. Relay team members can both paddle a single canoe for the water element, and then have one of the team members take off on the first bike loop.

 prizes & awards
We will try and recognize as much outstanding achievement as we can. Prizes and awards are given to the top three finishers in each class in which there are five or more competitors. Categories/classes with less than 5 competitors will be rolled into the next category/class. All relay teams will compete separately from individuals.

 required gear
  • Other than wearing a helmet on the bike and a PFD if canoeing, there is NO required gear for this race.
  • Wetsuits ARE allowed regardless of water temperature.
  • Cyclocross bikes ARE allowed.
  • Any non-motorized boat is allowed if you are participating in the canoe category of either the short or long triathlon. Kayak paddles may be used in canoes.

There are a limited number of canoes available for rent on a first-come, first-served basis. They come supplied with paddles and PFDs and cost $25/boat.

 skills certifications
There are NO skills certifications required for this race.

The open water swim is NOT along a beach and is out into the lake and over some very deep water. Although there will be safety boaters watching over the swimmers, racers should be strong and confident swimmers and comfortable in deep water.

Lake Hope State Park has both cabin rentals and a large campground within 10 minutes from the start. Prices depend upon # nights stay, whether or not you need electric, etc., so make your arrangements directly with the park. NOTE: There is a minimum 2 night stay for reservations, but the campground almost never fills, so if you only want to camp for one night, just show up early on the day you want to camp and you should be able to get a site with no problems.

The nearest motels are either in Nelsonville or Athens, both about 30 minutes away.
