Hope Furnace Adventure Weekend

PHOTOS Teams were divided into two groups and the odd numbered teams started with a 3 mile paddle on picturesque Lake Hope, while the evens began the race with a 15 mile biking leg on the excellent (albeit slippery) trails through the forest. After the teams completed the first element, they completed the alternative - ie. the bikers paddled, and the paddlers biked. After the conclusion of the first two disciplines, racers had as much time as remained for the freestyle navigation finish where they visited, on foot, and navigating by map and compass, as many of the 9 checkpoints spread throughout the forest as they had time for.
In the End, Christine Swetz' mountain biking prowess gave her enough of a lead that she was able to visit them all to win the race. Krista Duvall, last year's second place winner and no slouch on a bike herself, had time to get 8 CPs and secured another second place finish. Buff Betty Louisville RD Stephanie Ross, out with first time adventure racer Mia Severson managed to get 5 and beat all the other 50 pointers in for a third place finish.
In the end, everyone mad it back safely and enjoyed sharing their adventures over a plate of hot food and a cold drink.
